Rubber Band Ligation for Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoid ligation is one of the most common outpatient treatments available for patients with hemorrhoids.
Rubber band ligation is a procedure in which the hemorrhoid is tied off at its base with rubber bands, cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid. This treatment is only for internal hemorrhoids.
The hemorrhoid then shrinks and dies and, in about a week, falls off. Rubber band ligation can be performed in an ambulatory setting. The procedure causes less pain and has a shorter recovery period than surgical hemorrhoidectomy.
